Doug Benson began performing stand-up in San Francisco when he was 22 years old, after some friends pushed him to try it out.

With comics Arj Barker and Tony Camin, Benson co-created the show “The Marijuana-Logues” -  a play on Eve Ensler’s “Vagina Monologues.” Except, obviously, about weed. The show was well reviewed and found an enthusiastic audience, running for a year Off-Broadway in New York. “The Marijuana-Logues” was later turned into both a CD and book.

Surprisingly, despite his connection with pot, Benson did not actually try the drug until he was 27 years old. In 2006, he was named “Stoner of the Year” by High Times magazine. Benson resides in California, which has a law allowing medical marijuana. Benson has a card that certifies he can use pot for medicinal purposes.

Alongside being voted High Times’ “Stoner of the Year,” in 2006, Benson also created and produced a documentary called, “Super High Me,” which won the award for best documentary at the Stoney Awards in 2008.

Benson is also the co-creator of The Marijuana-Logues and appears regularly on VH1’s Best Week Ever, all while staying atop the stand up comedy circuit. He also had a Comedy Central Special come out last month and released his “Professional Humoredian” CD in 2007. His work ethic seems more like that of a methhead then a pothead to us here at SacramentoComedy, so here’s our attempt to straighten things out..

Gilbert Esquivel is a unique voice in stand-up comedy, able to entertain an audience of inner-city youth to a room of senior citizens without missing a beat. His ability to ad-lib has made him a favorite of many television producers to warm-up studio audiences for such shows as American Idol, Dancing with the stars, Star Search, The Tom Joyner television show, The Daytime Emmy’s and many more.

Gilbert started his stand-up career at The Ice House comedy club. He’s also appeared on, BET’s Comicview, Laffapalooza, Que Locos and the Tom Joyner Show. Gilbert won the first Latino comedy search just two years into his comedy and went to perform on such stages as the Apollo Theater to Caesars palace in Las Vegas.

He has also performed in many Churches, prisons and Universities throughout the country, sharing his experiences of growing up all over the United States as a Migrant worker.

Alicia has been performing standup for over ten years, sharing the stage with many funny, talented comics including Bill Santiago, Eugene Mirman, Arj Barker, Brent Weinbach, W. Kamau Bell, Vanda Mikoloski, Amy Stiller. Her first solo show, The Punchline won “Best of the Fringe” and “Best Female Solo Show” in the San Francisco Fringe Festival 2008. Her second solo show, Eat, Pray, Laugh! has played to sold out audiences in San Francisco, London, and Bombay.

She has performed at Cobb’s Comedy Club and The Punch Line The Improv in San Francisco as well as the Knitting Factory in Hollywood, Gotham Comedy Club, and Ha Comedy Club in New York.

Ruben Paul is one of the most unique and versatile comedians working today. His irrepressible energy, quick wit, and vivid story telling take audiences on a hilarious ride from beginning to end. This was evident in his recent stand out performance on George Lopez’s new hit Talk Show, “Lopez Tonight” on TBS. He became the 2nd comedian ever to perform on the show, and the first black comedian.

Ruben talks honestly about his life, and has insightful observations that bring audiences together no matter their age, race, creed, or color. In 2009, he was hand picked by Russell Peters to perform on the Showtime Network Special, “Russell Peters Presents”, which exposed him to a brand new international audience. Other Stand Up appearances include: CBS’ “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson”, “Comics Unleashed” on ABC, “HBO’s Comedy Showcase, “NBC’s “Friday Nights”, and B.E.T’s “Comic View”, just to name a few.

Ruben was born and raised in Carson, California which is one of the most diverse cities in the Los Angeles area. “I grew up in an all black neighborhood, went to an all Mexican high school, went to an all white church and shopped at a lot of Asian stores,” he quips. Ruben’s upbringing was the foundation for his universal appeal. His undeniable charisma, and spontaneity make him a crowd favorite every where he goes.

Matt Braunger was raised in Portland, Oregon. An actor since childhood, Matt studied theatre in New York and improvisation in Chicago under such luminaries as Susan Messing and Del Close.

Matt was recently a series regular on MADtv, his television credits also include The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, The Late Show with David Letterman, United States of Tara, Pushing Daisies, Carpoolers, Acceptable TV, and Live At Gotham.

Along with touring comedy clubs across the country, Matt has performed at a variety of prestigious comedy festivals including the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal 2007 & 2009, and Chicago in 2009, The TBS Comedy Festival Las Vegas 2007 & 2008, South By Southwest 2008 & 2009, and won the 2008 “Best Of The Fest” at the inaugural Rooftop Comedy Festival in Aspen.

In 2009, he was named to Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch and Comedy Central’s Hot 9 in ’09 list, his debut album Soak Up The Night was released by Comedy Central Records and named to the iTunes REWIND Top 20 Albums of 2009. He also recorded his half hour Comedy Central Presents special that is scheduled to air April 2010.

Matt is currently a regular performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and Improv Comedy Club in Los Angeles.

Shawn Pelofsky was born one out of ten Jews in Oklahoma. Performing since the age of eight, Shawn decided to pursue a career in comedy. She attended the University of Southern California and received a B.A. degree in The School of Theater.

During her time at USC, she joined an improvisational group “Comedius Interruptus” which became a motivating force to train at The Groundlings.

After college, Shawn was performing sketches and improv with people like (SNL’s) Will Ferrell and Will Forte’. With a couple years of improv under her belt, Shawn became a member of The ACME Comedy Theater. During her 3 years at ACME, she wrote and performed a variety of comedy sketches. During her time at ACME, Shawn dabbled in the field of stand-up comedy.

She is now a regular at the world famous Comedy Store on Sunset Blvd. and performs there every weekend in The Main Room. She has been featured in The Montreal “Just For Laughs” Comedy Festival and in the all female hit comedy tours, Pretty Funny Women, Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad and The Hot Tamales produced by Eva Longoria. She has opened up for greats such as Bill Maher, Margaret Cho, Richard Lewis, and Huey Lewis and The News.

Shawn has given the comedy competition circuit a run for its money as a finalist for “The Funniest Woman in Orange County” and in The Comedy Central Laugh Riots. She has traveled all over the world to entertain the troops in places such as Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Guantanamo Bay, Korea and Japan.

Dov Davidoff is a comedian and actor, and is a resident of Manhattan. He has worked extensively in different comedy clubs like the Comedy Cellar and Caroline’s Comedy Club. He has also been spotted on small screen shows like Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, Premium Blend, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn.

His other television credits include guest roles on the series Third Watch and Law & Order. He was part of the supporting cast of the football movie Invincible. Currently, he is working on the NBC crime drama series Raines.

Remi Boyer, on the television series Raines, is portrayed by Dov Davidoff. Remi, a police officer, may be on the good side of the law, but he has a tendency to antagonize other people.

“Since I was eleven, being a standup comic is all I ever wanted to be. I actually thought it was a noble profession. I remember being a kid and watching Rickles and Hackett on the tube, reading My Favorite Jokes column at the back of parade magazine, every Sunday listening to Carlin, Pryor, and Cheech and Chong records with my little brother, going to Woody Allen movies, and staying up late on Saturdays to see the first season of SNL.

To me being a comic meant to autonomous, angry, truthful, and funny. It meant being alive present in the moment. It meant having the freedom to figure out then be who I am in the purest way and do it shamelessly in front of people. Impose it on them and try to blow some minds in the process. It meant avoiding the soul death of the day job. Being a comic entitled me to live like a fucking gypsy until something clicked, and if it didn’t, who knows? I’ve been fortunate to have a few dispersed clicks throughout what I guess has been a show biz career of relative obscurity but with a real freedom from the bondage of mediocrity.

I have a hard time describing what I do or what I am up there on the stage. I’ve been called: neurotic, a story teller, heady, cerebral. angry, brilliant, bad, a problem, a cultural critic, a satirist, fucking funny, and important voice, etc.

Recently a young woman who had just seen me came out on to the street, came up to me, excited, and said, “You were really great. You’re like Wood Allen.” Of course, I found a way to make that a negative and said, “Really, I think I’m a little angrier than Woody Allen.” In response she said, “You’re like an Iggy Pop Woody Allen.”

I liked that. I think if that helps you understand what I do, it’s a reasonable description of where I’m at lately.

So, that being said, I am first and foremost a stand up comic. I have appeared on TV, in film, on the stage, in print, on the radio, but all I ever wanted to be, and what I am now, is a stand up comic. I’ve appeared on just about every show that allows standup comics.”
