My response to the whole mess? It just gives me gas…

I personally am a big fan of Joel McHale’s character on Community and can definitely see him making a successful leap to the big screen. Here’s hoping he has better luck than past NBC alums Matt LeBlanc or Matthew Perry. Remember Ed or Serving Sara? Neither do I.

Question: What are three things that make me laugh?

For those of you that know me, you know that I quote Kevin Pollak as one of my favorite comedians of all time. I had the opportunity to watch him perform maybe five years ago at the Laughs Unlimited in Old Sacramento and even though I have seen literally a thousand comedians perform live, I still get excited watching him work. As for Christopher Walken, most of you already know that Pollak’s impersonation is not only spot-on but probably ranked number one amongst his peers, including Walken himself.

You also should know that I love mystic around the raunchy and usually obscene comedy insider joke about The Aristocrats. (If you haven’t heard of it, google it. It is an acquired taste so start off slowly!). A number of years ago comedian Paul Provenza did a documentary of the same name featuring many well known comedians, including Pollak, doing Walken, telling the joke. So far, I have interviewed Bob Saget and Doug Stanhope who both have appeared in the movie. I hope to interview Kevin one day as well.

Twitter gets criticized for being little more than a venue for celebrities to publicize even the most fleeting, inane ephemera of their lives. Admittedly, this criticism is frequently apt. Before she mysteriously deleted her account (!), pop sensation Miley Cyrus was among the world’s reigning micro-bloggers with well over 2 millions people following her every twat. (Get you mind out of the gutter, that is the correct past tense form of “tweet”) What kinds of things did she choose to communicate given her influence? Here’s a small sample of her work:

My point is that while high profile babblers like Cyrus and Ashton Kutcher may have ruined twitter’s reputation in the eyes of culture at large, many comedians have used their 140 characters to advance the ancient art of the witty one-liner. There are few things in this world as inherently funny as a cute girl saying outrageously filthy and offensive things.  (Rapping grandma’s and water-skiing squirrels are up there) Her tweets may suffer because we don’t get to experience her pixyish delivery, but they still make me laugh.

A writer for the fabulous Tim and Eric show and occasional stand-up, “DJ” Doug Pound might be my top underground tweeter. His tweets are pun-heavy and oftentimes border on “anti-comedy” (a “so lame they’re good” kind of thing).

Much like Miley Cyrus, Todd Barry’s tweets are predominantly about the minutia of his day-to-day life. Unlike Cyrus, Barry’s are (intentionally) funny. Fans of his deadpan and self-aggrandizing stand-up act go nuts over his tweets.

Michael Ian Black has amassed a long and impressive comedic resume. He’s been a crucial part of shows like The State, Viva Variety, Stella, Michael and Michael Have Issues, as well as a not-too-shabby stand-up act. For better or for worse though, Black is probably destined to be best known as the stand-out riffer on VH1’s I Love The 80’s (and 70’s and 90’s and 2000’s). His pop-culture quips translate easily to the tweet genre.

Now Appearing in Comedy Heaven

For those of you who knew Grace White, Northern California based comedian, producer, friend and self-named “Old Hippie Chick” were saddened to hear on December 3, 2009 that Grace had lost her 2 year battle with lung cancer.

White, who had been given 3 months to live by doctors in November 2007, defied the odds and launched on a campaign to educate and raise money to fight the deadly disease.

White was a classic bohemian with, as she put it, “a mother who stalks her, a father to whom road rage is an art-form, and a stand-up comedy act like no other.” White launched her comedy career at age 50 and opened for many musical acts like Starship, Edgar Winter, and Jethro Tull, and performed with many headline comedians like Kevin Pollack, Jack Mayberry, Rocky LaPorte, and Father Guido Sarducci.

She performed on many television shows, like “Good Morning America” and the “Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon,” and was a regular at San Francisco’s long-running annual “Comedy Day” celebration.

While working as a standup comedian and producer of the comedy tour Women Who Kick Comedy Butt, tour that she took nationwide, she was diagnosed with stage 4 inoperable lung cancer.

During her 2 year battle, White worked with Bonnie J. Addario to get the word out about lung cancer’s underfunding and shot a national PSA that created awareness for the dire need for more funding for lung cancer research and early detection with Dr. Morosini (Dana Reeve’s sister).

White, was one of the most inspirational women in local comedy. Making friends and opening opportunities for herself and other comics where none existed before.

On a personal note, in the late 1990′s, when I produced a “one nighter” comedy room in Modesto, CA I knew that every year Grace would bid on taking over the room. She succeeded for a year and then in 2004, when I again was producing that room, she came to me and offered her “black book” of talent and offered it up unconditionally. I think that is what I remember most about Grace. She gave opportunities to all of the other comics by providing or finding venues for them to perform.

Shocked, hurt and a little disappointed that she didn’t discuss this major move with me before making the plunge, I accepted the fact that Chelsea is going to call her own shots whether I like it or not.

After telling Jay that she “trained” for the photo shoot by “not drinking for about a day and a half, ” a giant poster of her Playboy cover was revealed with her in a gold bikini. Chelsea, you are smoking hot! No airbrushing needed!

However, it is rumored that the inside photos of Chelsea are covered with an apron as she fixes a vodka soaked Christmas meal with her sidekick, Chuy.

I remember Soupy Sales as a kid and he was one of my favorites. Throwing pies in the faces of celebrities such as Shirley McLaine, Frank Sinatra and Tony Curtis became his trademark and my justification for all sorts of (what I thought) comedic moments at the dinner table. He was great giggling his way through “live” TV (you know, when you had to get up to change the channel) and sharing his joy at “putting on a show” for the nation.

Soupy, you will be missed.
