Excited for 2nd Semester of My College Tour

Geoff KeithHello everyone! I’m very excited to be a part of AmericasComedy.com. I am currently writing from Massachusetts on the first trip of this semester’s college tour. I’m fortunate to be one of the highest booked college comedians in the country. How long that will last, who knows? Last semester alone I performed at 60-plus universities. That started August 19 and ended, I believe, December 12. What a grind! I always wanted to be a top college comedian and now that I am I’ve found that I am all alone and spend almost no time at home. Sleeping at my condo in Los Angeles feels like the road now. I feel at home in random hotel rooms. If I don’t wake up and have to drive to an airport and catch two or three flights in a day I don’t know what to do with myself. After the show I have a hard time going to sleep even though I’m dead tired because I have so much going through my head. You would think I could pass out and sleep ten hours straight when I finally had the opportunity to, but that’s not the case at all.

So far on this trip (which will be January 17 – February 5) I have performed at Bay State College in Boston and last night at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, ME. I showed up to MMA and was shown to my room, which was tiny. I had a TV the size of a peanut and a bed the size of a cashew. The students, as they usually are, were very nice. They took me to the dining hall for dinner about a half hour after I showed up. I normally tell them I will just get food after my show, but I was hungry and I also didn’t seem to be offered a choice at this school. I learned a lot about the school from the dinner, but what I mostly found out was something I already knew: everyone wants to make the comedian laugh. Let’s just hang out guys, come on. They had this thing in the dining hall called a “doughboy” which is basically a big fried piece of bread that you can pour hershey’s syrup, melted butter, cinnamon, and powdered sugar on. Looked delicious. Also looked like the students here have their share of doughboys. Hey, if they’re happy, I’m happy for them.

The show at Bay State went great. It was at the Lenox Hotel (which I’ve stayed at on other trips to Boston) in the Dome Room. For a comedy show it was a pretty awkward set up. Most schools don’t know the proper way to set up or promote a comedy show, but I’m used to it and enjoy the shows no matter what (also it’s hard to get the word out on some campuses). I started out in comedy in the worst possible situations which is where I got my thick skin and learned how to get up anywhere and perform. Who would’ve thought the college circuit is where that would pay off the most? I just like being on stage and making people happy.

The crowd was 90% female and they loved it. Always nice to be able to show I can connect with the other side, haha. Last night’s show in Maine was about 90% men. Same Geoff Keith, same result (I just referred to myself in the third person, what a douchebag!). I don’t pander to the audience, I just do bits I’ve written and pick and choose what I think is best for who’s watching. Sometimes I guess wrong, but most of the time I guess right. It’s a very fulfilling feeling to be able to brighten people’s day. There is so much negativity in the world and deep down people want to just have fun and relax. I’ll be the clown. No problem.
