Hasan Minhaj Calls out Ashton Kutcher, Asks ‘What Were They Thinking?’

Last week, many of us saw the controversial Pop Chips commercial starring Ashton Kutcher. But did a supposedly funny, viral advertisement turn into an offensive slander? Comedian Hasan Minhaj thought so when he saw Kutcher in brownface and posted a YouTube video about the offense.
Minhaj stated that it was easy for the Pop Chips advertisement to poke fun at Asians and Indians because they have become the new “clownable minority.”
“They wouldn’t do that with any other ethnicity,” Minhaj said. “There’s a barbeque flavor of Pop Chips, why didn’t you make him blackfaced and Tyrone? Because you knew you’d get f**cking buried Pop Chips. That’s why.”
Pop Chips took down the advertisement and made apologetic tweets explaining they meant no harm. This was not enough for Minhaj. He wanted to know why Pop Chips thought the advertisement was well-suited for what they were trying to say.
HuffingtonPost stated that Minhaj does not think that Pop Chips is the only company insulting minorities. He is also offended by how the MetroPCS commercials portray their Indian characters.
Minhaj stated that there is no reason to pull others down to promote a product.
Minhaj’s video addresses the offense by mixing humor and a “why” factor to get viewers to understand the reason the commercial was wrong.
