This is big news for Portland’s vivacious comedy-loving people. Back in April, an ecstatic blogger for PDX Comedy Blog wrote, in anticipation of Helium’s July opening, ”Hot damn. This is so awesome people. Comedy in Portland just won’t stop!!”
Very successful and respected in Philadelphia, the new Helium, which showcases local and national stand-up talent, brings the laughter westward. According to the Portland urban blog, “Urban Works,” Marc Grossman, Helium’s owner, opened his Philadelphia club in 2005 and has turned a profit ever since. He has done his research and expects to duplicate Helium’s success in Portland. “I can’t wait to show the city what Helium can bring to Portland,” says Grossman. “I know this town is ready for it.”
“Helium Comedy Club” is a state-of-the-art venue that brings great talent to an intimate 250-seat theater. Its line-up includes the likes of Natasha Leggero, Maria Bamford, Bill Burr, Jimmy Pardo, and Portland’s own Auggie Smith. In addition to the comedy, Helium offers a mix of good food and decadent desserts.
Portland’s comedy lovers can enjoy Helium’s national headliner performing no more than sixty-feet away. The show lasts about an hour and forty minutes and includes an opener, a feature and a headliner with national TV credits.
“Helium Comedy Club” converted the large second floor of the Chelsea Ballroom space. This beautiful historic building, also known as “Red Men Hall,” was constructed in 1923.
