Jerrod Carmichael Breaks the Fourth Wall with ‘Phatlip’

On Friday, The Laugh Factory posted a video of The Pharcyde’s Fatlip joining Comedian Jerrod Carmichael on stage, telling an incomprehensible joke about Seth Rogen, returning to his seat and then repeatedly begging Jerrod to let him come back up onstage to try telling it again. In the video, you can see Fatlip immediately feeling the crowd not feeling him and heading offstage, followed by Jerrod letting the audience know he didn’t get it either… but he really wanted to, ”I wanna believe that everybody in here is gonna be in the shower tomorrow morning like ‘Oooooohhh!’”
The clip was actually shot on May 16 during Dot Comedy, a bi-monthly show that tries to bring “alt” comics into the club, and Jerrod still wishes he could understand what Fatlip thought was so funny. “I really thought I would get it, but then the next day…” Jerrod explains. “I wish me and everyone in the audience had exchanged phone numbers, so we could call each other and check. We should have started a support group for that joke and had monthly conference calls. ‘Okay, Mike? Steve? Still, no? Oh okay.’”
Fatlip’s opening to get up on stage came right at the very beginning of the set, when Jerrod spotted him in the crowd and asked where he recognized Fatlip from. It was a sincere question, Fatlip hadn’t called ahead or pulled any celebrity rank. ”Doron [Lion, Laugh Factory Marketing] and I were just sitting on the side, like ‘That guy looks really familiar.’ and I said ‘Well, I’ll go find out onstage.’ because what better time to answer our question than when I have a microphone in my hand and I’m supposed to be telling jokes?”
Summing up how he handled the situation, Jerrod says, “When stuff that unexpected happens, I just like to break the 4th wall. So sometimes you’ll see me looking straight at the camera like ‘What is happening??’”
