Myq Kaplan & Micah Sherman’s ‘Please Be Seated’

Do you know what it would sound like if Paul Scheer were the lead singer of The Barenaked Ladies?

I do! It would sound like Myq Kaplan and Micah Sherman’s debut album, Please Be Seated. Upon first listen, it is quite apparent that the two feed off of each others’ energy. Their improvisational style of banter keeps the show moving right along and allows the pair to seamlessly weave between speaking and singing.

Both Kaplan and Sherman are comic lifers. Sherman has been improvising since he was in high school and Kaplan has been performing stand up for years. Both comics have created monumental opportunities for themselves. Kaplan on late night talk shows such as Conan and The Late Show with David Letterman and Sherman in the field of improvisation at the iconic Second City Theatre in Chicago and the famous Del Close Marathon at NYC’s UCB. The two have joined forces and have created a product which highlights both of their strongest talents.

The album is comprised of short bits of banter, vignettes and prepared songs. In between songs the two flex their improv muscles, showing the audience their quirks. The audience often plays along with the two, shouting out suggestions, only to be shot down by one or the other. Don’t be fooled by their fuzzy, inviting way of goofing around – they lull their audience into a false sense of security and then go for the kill when the moment is right.

One of their most interesting tracks, “Inonic,” could easily be their first stand out hit. They say of the song “Ironic” by Alanis Morrisette, that it was completely non-ironic, merely a series of unfortunate coincidences. Thus, they rewrote the song to reflect the actual non-irony of it all, or as they say, inony. A particularly memorable and inonic line from this song is, “it’s a death row pardon… by the governor.”

Another catchy track is “Movie Star.” This track jokes about how Micah is awkward looking. They also creatively spin unattractive celebrities into the lyrics. For instance, Micah suggests, “Paul Giamatti.” Myq responds, “Not a hottie, more like something you’d find in a potty.” This track promises to stick to your brain like a pancake on a pan without Pam. In a good way, of course.

The album was produced by the label BSeen Media and will appear on shelves on September 25. Make sure to look for it on iTunes where it’s available for pre-order. You can follow Micah at @profdork and Myq @myqkaplan on Twitter.
