The Killing of Comedian Warsame Shire Awale

You all know the spiel: We’re dirty Americans and we always take shit for granted. Things like, being able to say what we want and free reign on religion. Not to mention all of these fast food joints. While some jerk-off may deck you in the face for an asshole opinion at least you don’t really have to worry about being capped by a brigade of extremist with AK-47′s.

Overseas-related news always highlights murdered journalist and government officials, arguably people who may have had no business being where they were.  What about indigenous entertainers? You know, Normal people?

Well it’s really no surprise that saying too much about the wrong thing in a place like Somalia can get you killed, which is the unfortunate fate for Warsame Shire Awale, a Somali writer and comedian.

After a nudging jokes at  Al-Qaeda, Awale was executed by two gunmen near his home on Monday evening. He died in the hospital.

“Two men armed with pistols shot and wounded him near his house in Waberi district, he died shortly after in hospital,” said a colleague of his at Radio Kulmiye.

Awale isn’t the only one unfortunately, this murder trails behind fellow comedian Abdi Jeylani Malaq Marshale who was killed in August and also worked at Radio Kulmiye. Marshale was revered for his voice on politics, more specifically against the Shebab, another Islamic extremist militant group.

An American comedian’s worst nightmare is to flop, be heckled or get booed off stage. But at least they don’t have to walk home looking over their shoulder, at least they get to try again tomorrow.
