Will God Get A Pie In The Face?

Soupy Sales, the comedian whose anything-for-a-laugh career was built on 20,000 pies to the face and 5,000 live TV appearances across a half-century of laughs, has died. He was 83.

I remember Soupy Sales as a kid and he was one of my favorites. Throwing pies in the faces of celebrities such as Shirley McLaine, Frank Sinatra and Tony Curtis became his trademark and my justification for all sorts of (what I thought) comedic moments at the dinner table. He was great giggling his way through “live” TV (you know, when you had to get up to change the channel) and sharing his joy at “putting on a show” for the nation.

Soupy, you will be missed.

I absolutely loved Soupy’s style — it was fun for the whole family (most of the time); how could you not love a guy with a name like “Soupy,” right?

Soupy had a great disposition. He started his career doing live children’s shows. I did see in a cable comedy “Bloopers” show that one time the staff pulled a practical joke on Soupy. There was a knock at the door as there was every week and when Soupy opened the door, off-camera, was a topless woman. I don’t remember if this ever got on air, but it was very funny watching him try to keep a straight face though it definitely wasn’t family fare!
